Prada
Established in 1913 by Mario Prada, the brand began as a leather goods store located in Milan, it was known as Fratelli Prada. Prada was just like other European houses during that era, by creating luggage and trunks for the travel market. After six years, in 1919, Prada became the supplier to the Italian Royal Household.
After Mario Prada’s passing in 1952, his daughter Luisa took over since there was no one else that was appointed to run the company.
In 1978, Luisa’s daughter, Muccia, took over. All of Prada’s success in the past 40 years can be credited to Muccia. She was initially a politician, who received a PhD in political science from the University of Milan. She was a hard-core feminist who was also a member of the Italian Communist Party.
Way before she took over the company, she met Patrizio Bertelli, who was a leather goods salesman, who funny enough was selling Fratelli Prada knockoffs. They eventually married and became business partners. Muccia brought her modern, feminine ideas to the brand, while Bertelli helped in expanding Prada. With her creative designs and his great salesman skills, the sales went through the roof. One of Muccia’s successful creations was the Pocono nylon bag. Poco nylon was a material used in military tents, making it water proof while also being beautiful. As the company kept growing successfully, Muccia only kept on brining unique and forward thinking designs to the table. Prada became known as an elegant, but cool brand in the 1980s. From the 90s till now, Prada is still known for that while also being extremely luxurious.
Until this day, Muccia is still creative director of the high-minded, luxury brand. One of the things to admire of this brand is that within 40 years it has gone from selling leather goods to a billion dollar global luxury brand. According to popular culture, Prada is the devil, and even if that may be; it is also for all of the ambitious, chic, and modern women out there. For women who think outside the box and get the job done, just like Muccia Prada herself.
